Well, yes, the mentor can teach students things…but let's be more specific here –
A mentor of any kind is there to help you over the rough spots. A mentor is a friend, not necessarily one that you have chosen, but a person who looks out for you and guides you in the right direction, whether it be academics or social activities.
A mentor can be very helpful when you have a question about your grades or your school. A mentor has been there, done that.
Hopefully your mentor is an intelligent and well meaning person who may even become your best friend, who knows.
Use your mentor to your advantage, but don't take advantage. Remember, they wanted to do this for YOU, not for THEM.

my son has a mentor and the mentor heps him with his behavior which would be behavior modification, he helps him to be able to interact with other children so he teaches social skills and he takes him out to different events such as the movies and to the park and different things like that. My sons mentor even takes him to like the pet store and they count like the fish so he teaches him math. He even helps him out with his homework and thing that he is learning at home and school so he is teaching him alot of academics and daily living skills. Mentors do alot of things and my son has been with the same mentor for 6 years. It has helped him out a lot

You should inquire with the program director for the specifics of the role, since it could be a bit different from one school to another.

When I was in school, a peer mentor/leader was a student who'd received a bit of training in helping other students who needed someone to talk to, but didn't feel comfortable or safe opening up to a counselor.
